$4,300,000 Improvement and Redevelopment of Marian R. Byrnes Park

Greetings 7th Ward,

It is my pleasure to share this important community update. In 2019 Marian R. Byrnes Park will receive a series of improvements and upgrades including new landscaping, beautification, and a new multi-use trail.

Major activities for 2019 include”

  • Completion of a 1.35 mile 12’ wide multi-use asphalt trail with 3’ earthen shoulders on both sides and an adjacent planted ditch to capture the stormwater and allow it to infiltrate into the soil (with IDOT, spring 2019)

  • Community park opening/naming celebration (spring/summer 2019)

  • Cultural programming with Night Out in the Parks (summer/fall 2019)

  • Family-oriented nature programming (summer/fall 2019)

  • Fence repair along the alley (winter/spring 2019)

  • Installation of approximately 100,000 native plants (ongoing starting in the spring of 2019)

  •  Installation of approximately 100 trees (ongoing starting in the spring of 2019)

  • Ongoing landscape management (ongoing)


Work completed thus far:

  •  Treatment of invasive plant species across entire 140 acre site

  • Removal of about 60 acres of invasive plant shrubs/brush

  • Remediation of approximately 2 acres

  • Installation of native seeds across approximately 90 acres

  • Installation of 1,200 trees

  • Installation of over 90,000 native plants

In total, just over $4.3 million has been allocated to the development and improvement of Marian R. Byrnes Park.
